Volunteers needed for Westside Orchard Garden for Sunburst Unlimited

Sunburst Unlimited is looking for volunteers to help out at Westside Orchard Garden.

The Westside Orchard Garden is a 2.2 acre lot where the nonprofit grows, models and uses a variety of gardening methods, teaches adult classes, mentors children raising their own vegetables, and experiments with new innovative cultivation methods and organizes seminars for groups. .

The Summer in the Garden Kids program guides over 125 children from the Boys and Girls Club, the Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army. Children spend Monday through Thursday in the garden learning how to grow and care for vegetables, prepare healthy snacks, and learn about composting, pollinators and nutrition.

Young gardeners grow 4,000 pounds of fresh produce which is donated to children’s kitchens, ensuring access to fresh produce for food insecure children and families.

Volunteers are strongly encouraged in the garden. Opportunities range from helping children grow and harvest vegetables, helping out on picnic days in the garden, or coming to the garden on weekends to help with gardening, pulling weeds, extracting honey. or harvest vegetables.

Volunteers are always supervised at the garden, so volunteers have the opportunity to learn from expert gardeners.

The garden operates Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with occasional volunteer work evenings on weekends. On June 26, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., volunteers will work alongside the children in the garden.
